Georgian figure skater Inga Gurgenidze secured a history-making win at the European Youth Olympic Festival, held in Batumi, by winning the country’s first-ever gold medal in the discipline.
The 16-year-old skater overcame a third-place finish in the short program to win in the concluding segment. She earned the highest point of 71.90, being ahead by 11.21 points against her rival.
Leri Khabelov, President of Georgia’s National Olympic Committee, gave her the award during the ceremony.
Until now, all of Georgia’s previous medals at the Festival had come in men’s figure skating:
- Vakhtang Murvanidze won silver in 1997
- Nika Egadze took bronze in 2017
- Konstantine Supatashvili earned silver in 2023
