National Archives of Georgia: over 2.7mln pages of historical documents digitised in 2024

January 27, 20251 min read

The National Archives of Georgia announced on Tuesday that its specialists digitized 2,786,393 archival document pages, 129 film materials, 7,375 photographs, and 465 audio recordings over the past year. This transition to digital media is intended both to preserve the original materials from physical deterioration and to broaden public access.

In 2024, the institution also introduced approximately 10 new historical collections on its website. These include multimedia pages dedicated to Vano Sarajishvili—a singer and co-founder of Georgia’s professional vocal performance school in the early 20th century—and Dimitri Kipiani, a publicist, translator, and influential figure in the late 19th century. Additional online offerings highlight major historical figures and events such as Akaki Chkhenkeli, who served as Foreign Minister during the First Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918–1921), and the 1924 anti-Soviet uprising.

Other featured collections showcase paintings of Tbilisi’s Old Town by the German-Georgian artist Oskar Schmerling, depictions of Georgian historical monuments, as well as the works of pioneering Georgian photographer Aleksandre Roinashvili. Also included are photographs by Vittorio Sella, the 19th-century Italian photographer and mountaineer who captured scenes of Georgia’s highland Svaneti region.
