December 7, 20232 min read

The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, Belgium proudly presents the inaugural solo exhibition of Karlo Kacharava, an eminent cultural figure from Georgia whose influence reverberated throughout the late 20th century. This exhibition marks a significant highlight within the framework of the Europalia-Georgia cultural initiative. Europalia, a biennial celebration, meticulously crafts a rich tapestry of artistic and cultural expressions from select countries in its editions.

Dubbed “Sentimental Traveller,” this exhibition is a profound showcase of Kacharava’s most pivotal creations. It encompasses a captivating array of paintings, works on paper, and intricately illustrated diaries, as confirmed by the Georgian Culture Ministry’s announcement earlier this week.

Running until April 15, this event grants European audiences a rare and invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in the diverse oeuvre of Kacharava. Within the context of this festival, which the organizing body describes as holding “special significance for the country’s European future,” visitors will gain profound insights into the artist’s multifaceted contributions.

The grand scope of Europalia-Georgia spans approximately 60 expansive events across Belgium and its neighboring nations. Among these events are two major exhibitions: the first, an exploration of the avant-garde movement in Georgia from 1900 to 1936, hosted at the Center of Fine Arts in Brussels. The second, titled “Georgia as a Meeting Place,” unfolds at the Royal Museum of History and Art in Brussels.

Highlighted by the Ministry as exhibitions showcasing “national treasures,” these displays form the cornerstone of a four-month-long program, inviting audiences to delve into the rich cultural heritage and artistic legacies of Georgia.
