Georgia and Iceland Sign Landmark Air Traffic Agreement to Boost Connectivity

March 4, 20251 min read

Georgia and Iceland have officially signed a landmark air traffic agreement, paving the way for direct flights between the two nations. The agreement, signed on February 26 in Reykjavik, marks a significant step toward strengthening aviation, tourism, and economic ties.

According to Georgia’s Civil Aviation Agency, the agreement was signed by Givi Davitashvili, Head of the Civil Aviation Agency of Georgia, and Martin Ejólfsson, Permanent Secretary of State of Iceland. The agreement is based on liberal aviation principles, allowing airlines from both countries to operate without restrictions on the number of designated carriers or destinations. Furthermore, airlines will have the autonomy to determine flight capacity and frequency based on market demand.

The agreement, which has been in the works since 2018, was initially formalized in 2023 during the International Civil Aviation Negotiations (ICAN2023) under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It will officially take effect once both governments complete their internal ratification procedures.

Beyond facilitating direct flights, the agreement is expected to encourage greater airline interest in the route, expand flight networks, and foster deeper tourism, trade, and economic cooperation between Georgia and Iceland.

In addition to signing the agreement, representatives from both countries’ aviation authorities discussed broader opportunities for bilateral cooperation and expressed a commitment to strengthening aviation sector relations.

This milestone agreement reflects Georgia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its global aviation connectivity, opening doors to new travel and business opportunities.
