Clay Wine Contest celebrates ancient winemaking tradition

January 27, 20251 min read

Celebrating the world’s oldest known winemaking tradition, the inaugural Clay Wine Contest successfully launched with more than 80 submissions representing nine countries. This new platform spotlights wines crafted in clay vessels—such as Amphora and Qvevri—and aims to connect both wine professionals and enthusiasts.

Highlights from the 2025 Contest

  • Judges provided detailed feedback instead of traditional rankings.
  • Two top prizes and six “Best of the Best” distinctions were announced.

Winning Entries

  • White: Mildiani Family Winery, Bouquet Kisi Qvevri 2014 (Georgia)
  • Red: De Bortoli, Melba Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Amphora 2022 (Australia); Pirveli, Saperavi Qvevri 2022 (Georgia); Voskevaz, Haghtanak Karasi Collection 2019 (Armenia)

Co-founders Mako Abashidze and Tanya Mann expressed gratitude to all participants and look forward to spotlighting more unique clay-fermented wines worldwide. Tastings of the winning selections will take place in London and Edinburgh this February, with submissions for the 2026 contest opening in January.
